➤ Recognize & Reward the right people at the right time

➤ How to resolve cultural conflict between current and new employees

Recognize the importance of company culture

The event started with Ms. Thai Van Linh’s sharing on shaping company culture.  First off, company culture is the face of an enterprise. When invested seriously, company culture not only brings profits, but also brings positive values to the success of the business.

So how do startups that lack financial resources can form an effective company culture? According to Ms. Linh, “When there is no financial strength, what startups do to form culture is  create a positive environment for employees to develop their careers.”

A business without an attractive culture will not be able to retain talent. Over time, this lack of culture will lead to failure. Culture is an intangible asset and requires serious investment from leadership at an early stage. Yet, the number of Vietnamese enterprises that seriously invest in this topic is still limited.

To specify a solution to this puzzle, she suggested that companies should start practising an interactive recruitment method. She explained in detail: “The HR department at TVL Group usually spends more than an hour and a half to discuss with candidates on company policies such as overtime when needed, tackling work together, etc. Thus, this gives candidates a chance to consider whether these requirements are suitable for them before making their decision.”

For growing startups, the journey to finding the right culture is a huge challenge. Employees come and go as your startup grows. The cultural conflict between the current and new employees is certain.

Mr. John Le, leader of the real-estate technology startup Propzy, shared: “You have to break it very early. In order to win the long term battle, the whole team must come together. Every time you go through a doubling of an organization, it will be hard to maintain the colour of that culture. As the leader you should be able to set the tone at the top and set it all the way through to the middle, that middle is going to help you connect to the bottom.”

Design a policy of recognize & reward in the 4.0 era

Every year, global organizations spend an average of $46 billions on building recognize & reward policies. Not only does this type of policy increase the employee’s engagement with the company by 14%, but it also helps to increase employees’ productivity significantly.

In charge of managing partnerships at a technology corporation, Ms. Florence Trang Le, Head of Business Relations at FPT Software shared: “Instead of confronting their employees, firms should take advantage of technology in reward and recognition processes. At FPT, we use myFPT to measure and track employee productivity. MyFPT has helped shorten the gap between leaders and employees and encouraged employees to form positive actions such as working early, cost-saving, and recognizing the right people at the right time.”

Despite bringing positive values to businesses, there are many reasons why it is difficult to form an effective recognize & reward policy. Employees tend to love rewards but are afraid to take criticism. Especially with high-level personnel, taking criticism is even more difficult.

From a leadership perspective, Mr. Ngo Manh Cuong – CEO of FPT Online added: “Reward and criticism is a daily duty. However, leaders need to praise the right people at the right time to avoid causing internal conflict. In order to provide constructive feedback, leaders should act professionally and [prioritize remedial measures]. Unlike rewards, criticism should be discussed  privately, preferably in one-to-one meetings.”

Behind the success of any large or small business is the dedication of its employees. At the end of the day, an effective reward policy will help your business engage and retain talents.
