Leveraging Employee Experience in the Digital Age

As human beings, each of us is uniquely different which makes people management one of the most complex functions in the world. While organizations attempt to tackle people management just by hiring more HR team members, they might end up pushing the problem even further.

But the good news is that HR technology is getting more and more advanced to help solve complex problems. Today – with the advent of AI, machine learning, and other emerging technologies – managers have a better chance at understanding their employees’ aspirations or areas of improvement, without having to build a large HR team. The data and analytics from these products can provide more valuable insights to improve employees’ personal experience.

According to Mercer’s Global Talent Trends 2022 study, four in five companies (both midsize domestics and large multinationals) are already using or are planning to implement an AI-driven benefits enrollment platform (up from 51% in 2020).

So how specifically can these technologies leverage employee experience?

Pre-employment: From the beginning of the talent life cycle

Every employee starts out as a candidate. They will carry their first day experience throughout their whole career.  With conversational chatbots and AI-assisted Application Tracking Systems (ATS), the earliest stages of the talent acquisition process that are typically dull and exhausting might become more pleasing to cope with.

Moreover, the emotional connection built with a candidate determines how they feel about the organization and their roles. Ironically, some non-human intervention in the form of AI can improve this by quick response to the candidates’ concerns with typical work issues, providing them with in-time and right-to-the-point information,…

With AI tools taking care of preparatory tasks of sourcing, screening, and talent matching, human recruiters may focus on other strategic tasks like maintaining candidate engagement, negotiation, and on-boarding. Tedious tasks that once took recruiter hours upon hours to complete — be it boring data entry or replying to repetitive questions — are now relegated to computers.
Tidio’s extensive research reveals that 41% of HR professionals think AI can provide valuable insights during the recruitment process, while 39% believe it can make a recruiter’s job easier.

 Breaking away from traditional learning

With IQ having taken the backseat and EQ (Emotional Quotient) predominantly driving employee experience, there are yet other important factors that took place – the happiness and fun quotient. According to recent studies by PwC, Gen Z and millennials currently make up approximately 38% of the global workforce and this percentage will rise to about 58% by 2030. They are not captivated nor motivated by traditional teaching approaches.

However, training does not have to be tedious and confined. Organizations can now break away from traditional eLearning and outdated learning management systems (LMS) and move on to more engaging platforms employing gamification, AR/VR, and other immersive content.

By not sticking to the traditional way of learning, employees get to be the person in charge of what, when, and how they learn. By that, they can enjoy their learning experience while still adhering to business strategies and larger team goals. Learning can now become an enjoyable recess that adds fun to the employees’ experience instead of being a chore.

Based on the latest report of Microsoft, 76% of employees say they’d stay at their company longer if they could benefit more from learning and development support. In fact, employees consider opportunities to learn and grow as the #1 driver of great work culture, a jump from 2019 when it was ranked #9.

“So taken as a whole, prioritizing employee learning and growth presents a winning retention formula for organizations— or, alternately, if neglected, could pose an existential threat.”

Tune into what employees really want

One of the greatest uses of humanized AI technology is in how it can personalize experiences for individual workers. According to a Gallup poll, 67% of employees are not engaged in their work and a further 18% are actively disengaged. The cost of this lack of engagement was estimated to be $7 trillion dollars.
With the use of AI analytical tools, we can actively listen and pick up on what employees actually want and need – oftentimes even before they do. These tools can even pinpoint employees who are intending to leave, allowing us to follow up their reasons and come up with the solutions for employee retention.

The question is, what can we do more than that?

The power of technologies opens many doors for HR agents and leaders to better build their organization as a whole, which starts with the employee journey first.
